What is Bhakti Yoga?
The Sanskrit word Bhakti means participation (from the root bhaj “to partake”). The practice of chanting or singing mantra is a part of several Hindu traditions, and Bhakti emerged as a distinct form of yoga about 500 B.C. It is one of six major branches of yoga, and is considered by some to be the oldest form of yoga. It is rooted in the Vedas; ancient Indian scriptures dating back four thousand years. Although Bhakti yoga was developed within Hindu culture, it can be practiced by anyone, as the popular practice of kirtan (group mantra singing) focuses the mind, body, and heart on acts of service for the benefit of all living beings.
The harmonium, an acoustic pump organ similar to the accordion, is a popular instrument used both in group singing as well as personal mantra practice.
